Song Details from the album New Beginnings |
|||||
This French song has been done by artists as varied as Blossom Dearie in 1957 and Feist in 2004. We decided to team it up with Fats Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’. Doug’s been doing that song for awhile, but Brulée had never done it. Tout Doucement sung as a counter melody to Ain’t Misbehavin’ works really well. And the lyrics come together well, too. Tout Doucement translates loosely – all slowly – and talks about “en flanant gentiment” strolling prettily and taking your time (for love). The second bridge says: Never go too fast/Loving simply/To get success/Be very very prudent/Love will then come/And snuggle up in your arms. Waller’s lyrics say: No one to talk/All by myself/But I’m happy on the shelf/Ain’t Misbehavin’/I’m savin’ my for you. Put together, it speaks of someone happily waiting and saving their love for the right person who has yet to come along. Special thanks to Dennis Hadley for the really nice Parisian accordion sound that he added. And I think Chip really had fun thinking he was being a vaudeville drummer on this one.
